Four Regional Extension Centres take validated technology to farmer level. Two sit in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, in traditional muga and eri country; two sit in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, where the argument for ericulture is different — castor is already grown for oilseed, so the leaf is a by-product the household is not otherwise using.
- REC, Sille
Arunachal Pradesh. Muga and eri extension; wild muga populations occur in the foothills here.
- REC, Lakhimpur
Assam. The upper Brahmaputra valley — the heartland of muga culture, and the densest extension programme of any centre.
- REC, Fatehpur
Uttar Pradesh. Eri in the castor belt, on dual-purpose plantations.
- REC, Ahmedabad
Gujarat. India’s largest castor-producing state; carries a newly sanctioned project and one of only two chawki rearing training programmes.
